As more Washington homeowners add battery storage to their homes, they’re discovering that their battery can do more than provide backup power during an outage—it can also earn money while helping strengthen the electric grid. Puget Sound Energy’s Flex Batteries program is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) that rewards homeowners for allowing their battery to support the grid during periods of peak electricity demand.

If you’re considering adding battery storage to your home, this program can significantly improve the value of your investment.

What Is a Virtual Power Plant?

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of privately owned battery systems that work together to support the electrical grid. Instead of relying solely on expensive power plants during periods of high demand, utilities can temporarily draw small amounts of stored energy from thousands of participating home batteries.

These “Flex Events” typically occur during times when electricity demand is unusually high or when the grid is under stress. Participation is automatic—your battery communicates with the utility, so there’s nothing you need to do once you’re enrolled. Throughout the year, your battery continues to prioritize your home’s backup power needs while helping improve grid reliability during these limited events.

Earn Incentives for Participating

PSE offers two types of financial incentives for homeowners who enroll an eligible battery system:

  • Enrollment Incentive: Receive $75 per kWh of battery storage, up to $1,000 per battery, after enrolling.
  • Annual Participation Incentive: Earn $0.50 per kWh your battery provides during Flex Events, with annual payments of up to $500 per battery.

These incentives are in addition to the everyday benefits of owning a battery system, including backup power during outages and increased energy independence.

Enhanced Incentives Can Dramatically Reduce Installation Costs

For qualifying customers, PSE also offers Enhanced Incentives that can substantially reduce the upfront cost of purchasing and installing a battery system.

Depending on eligibility, homeowners may qualify for:

  • Up to $10,000 toward equipment and installation costs through Pathway A, which is designed for qualifying customers based on factors such as income, participation in certain assistance programs, registered medical devices, referrals from community organizations, or other qualifying circumstances.
  • Up to $5,000 through Pathway B for customers located in specific areas of PSE’s electrical grid where additional battery capacity can improve local reliability.

Because qualification requirements can be complex, working with an experienced installer is essential.
