CAN THE HOMEOWNER SELL POWER BACK TO THEIR UTILITY?

Yes, through net metering, any excess electricity generated will spin your meter backwards which has the effect of selling your excess power to the utility at a full retail rate. On a monthly basis, you pay only the net of what power you used. If you generate more power than you use in a month your utility company will forward your excess solar energy credits to be used during the next month. This allows any excess energy generated in the summer to be used during the winter when there is less solar energy and usually higher energy usage.

DOES A POWERWALL NEED TO BE INSTALLED WITH SOLAR?

Not technically, but it’s hard to see the benefit of having battery storage that’s not connected to a solar system in Washington State. Unlike areas that have a high variation in on-peak and off-peak rates, think California, time-of-use load shifting isn’t financially rewarding in the Evergreen State. There is no need to store your unused solar energy since net metering allows you to store your excess production on the grid as a credit to use later. This is essentially a free energy storage vault. Battery backup systems that are connected to a solar system from 2022-2032 are eligible for the [...]

Utility And Tax Incentives

Utility and Tax Incentives When you combine Washington State’s solar power incentive program with Federal solar incentives, offsetting your electric usage and locking in escalating utility rates, the Seattle and Puget Sound area make sense as a secure green investment. Net Metering All Solar electricity generated that is not used at the time of generation will be fed back to the utility grid, and you will be credited for these surplus kWh’s (this is analogous to your utility meter spinning backwards). Your monthly utility bill will [...]

How It Works

Solar Solutions How it Works Warranty Going Solar Steps Provider Checklist How Solar Works - Understanding The Differences Although they may look complicated, solar panels have no moving parts and require very little maintenance, other than occasional cleaning. An inverter takes the DC power directly from the solar panels and converts it to the same AC power that your home uses. At Sunergy Systems, we care about helping homeowners plan for future energy consumption. Did you know that the average American household [...]

How Much Power Can Solar Energy Generate on a Cloudy Day?

Clouds gather. The sky grows dark. A solar homeowner may naturally wonder: How much energy can my solar system generate during a cloudy day? While, of course, solar panels need sunlight to produce energy, it’s important to learn how cloudy conditions can affect the efficiency of solar energy generation and how factors such as partial shade can impact your solar system power output. Yes, solar panels still work in cloudy weather — they just might generate less power, depending upon the quality and efficiency of your panels. DOES A CLOUDY DAY AFFECT SOLAR ENERGY GENERATION? Anyone who has gotten sunburned [...]

Blast Your AC All Summer Long Next Year with Solar Power

Summer is ending, but it's always good to prepare for next year! There’s nothing greater than cranking up the air conditioner when it gets hot and sweaty outside. And there’s nothing worse than the sky-high electricity bill that follows. ACs seem to suck up dollars as efficiently as they cool the air. That is if you get your electricity off the grid. If, on the other hand, your house is generating its own power with a photovoltaic (PV) solar system, your energy costs can go down sharply. But hold that thought for a minute. Today, nearly 90 percent of U.S. [...]

Generators vs. Solar Batteries: Which is the Better Backup?

A well-designed solar system can meet the majority of the electricity needs for a homeowner, but there are times when power needs to be pulled from the grid. While many energy providers give the option of net metering to cover the cost of electricity used by the local power company, it’s not available to all solar homeowners. Having a backup supply of electricity can provide power during outages like PG&E's Public Power Safety Shutoffs and can also provide more electricity cost savings. Let’s face it: emergencies happen. California wildfires, rolling blackouts, and power outages happen. Many people don’t realize it, [...]

Which States Save The Most With Solar?

This question gets asked a lot by those interested in going solar, and it seems like the answer should be no sweat. But while photovoltaic (PV) solar power is gaining in popularity across many states, a variety of factors determine just how much solar installation costs in any given location. Those factors change not just from state to state but from house to house. Which factors have the biggest impact? Here's a quick rundown: TYPE OF HOUSE AND ITS ORIENTATION TO THE SUN No two houses have the same combination of size, roof, and shading, and none have the same [...]

Is My Roof Good For Solar? The Questions Behind The Question

If you’re considering a rooftop solar installation, chances are you’ve already done some research about the many benefits of commercial solar power—beyond lower energy costs. But before you can take advantage of any available tax incentives, green credits, or net metering options, you need to know if your building can actually support the solar equipment you’re considering. To best answer, “Is my roof good for solar?”, it helps to start with the five preliminary questions below. Keep in mind that a final answer that covers every situation is beyond the scope of this article. No two roofs are exactly the [...]

Washington State has a New Solar Incentive!

What a great 2019 State legislative session we had for solar energy! Washington State has a new solar incentive program that rewards homeowners 6.5% to 10.4% for going solar in the form of a sales tax exemption! For a typical-sized system, this is a $2,000 incentive. The exemption is included in the 100% Clean Energy Act, which was signed into law on May 7. All solar systems installed after June 30th will be 100% exempt from State sales tax, resulting in a lower solar system cost and a faster payback. Clean Energy Act Signed Into Law The Clean Energy Act [...]
